    About the Item

    Monumental and historically important Salem Massachusetts giltwood convex mirror. Purchased by Nathaniel Bowditch for his Salem House around 1810-15. Carved and Crafted in Salem. Eagle Mounted with giltwood balls and foliate arms. Provenance: This mirror is from Salem MA and was purchased when Nathaniel Bowditch was living at 9 North Street 1811-1823. It has since passed through direct descent from Nathaniel Bowditch to the Loring Family . Last photo shows mirror hanging in situ at "Round Plain Farm" Prides Crossing, MA Nathaniel Bowditch (March 26, 1773 – March 16, 1838) was an early American mathematician remembered for his work on ocean navigation. He is often credited as the founder of modern maritime navigation; his book The New American Practical Navigator, first published in 1802, is still carried on board every commissioned U.S. Naval vessel.

    A pair of Empire style gilt bronze Brule-Parfums in manner of Pierre-Philippe Thomire, 19th century each openwork cover with an acorn finial above the body having a rim cast to show grape bunches and a continuous band of classically draped figures, further mounted with ram masks, raised on a stepped square plinth mounted with opposing griffins flanking a flaming urn. Each in very good condition, minor surface wear. 19th century.
