  • American Tall Case or Longcase Clock by Frederick Wingate, Augusta, ME 1818. This very well-proportioned clock is made of indigenous wood, birch, Birdseye maple and pine secondary wood. Retaining all its original elements. Raised bracket feet, a New England style pierced bonnet top in open fretwork pattern. The dial was most likely painted in Boston. Very similar to dials painted by Spencer Nolan who rented space from his father-in-law, Aaron Willard. --retains original weights and pendulum as well. Notes: rederick Wingate was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, on January 11, 1782, and died in Augusta, Maine, on November 16, 1864. Frederick worked as a silversmith, watchmaker, and clockmaker, and became one of Maine's most prolific clockmakers. He may have learned his trade in Massachusetts before moving to Augusta. As a clockmaker, he made many tall clocks, as well as some banjo and mirror clocks. Frederick taught Benjamin Swan, who was from Augusta, to make clocks. Swan's clocks are often very similar to Frederick's, sharing features like case design, contrasting woods, and Nolen & Curtis dials. Many Augusta clocks also use figured maple in the waist door and base panel, have distinctively shaped waist and hood columns, and Boston-painted dials by Spencer Nolen. Creator: Frederick Wingate (Clockmaker) Dimensions: Height: 91 in (231.14 cm) Width: 20 in (50.8 cm) Depth: 10 in (25.4 cm) Style: Federal (Of the Period) Materials and Techniques: Birch,Birdseye Maple,Pine Place of Origin: United States Period: Early 19th Century Date of Manufacture: 1818 Condition: Good Wear consistent with age and use. Some minor loss to face paint restoration.

A Rare and Complete American Federal Tall Case Clock. Riley Whiting Wooden Works, original. A Rufus Cole Grain-Painted and Stenciled Case. Signed R. Cole Painter. Circa 1820-25 Rufus Cole worked in partnership with his father, Abraham, in the Mohawk Valley of New York at Broadalbin-just west of Albany, combining talent producing notable tall cases during the 1820s and the early 1830s. Abraham Cole is listed in the Grantor Records of Montgomery County-1835 as carpenter and co owner of a sawmill with son Rufus listed as a painter; underscoring the logic that father made the cases while son painted and decorated. This duo incorporated a variety of 30-hour wooden works made by prominent makers of the period; all bonnets and cases are similar with the exception of the finial shape. In this case a Riley Whiting face and works had been selected by Cole. This dramatic example with imaginative whirling flourishes grained with various shades of brownish red against a background While the graining paint was wet Cole created striping by removing the solution in straight lines the end result being simulated inlay. The elaborately ornamented case is gilt stenciled with bronze powder motifs found on the bonnet, throat and base; featured are diamond shaped devices on throat and base painted black offering a strong palate for over-stenciled baskets of fruits and flowers. An almost identical clock was sold in Massachusetts. The only difference is that there was an eagle stenciled in bronze paint on that case, just above the door. Our clock has a stag stenciled in that location. Also our clock retains all of its original varnish. A truly magnificent survivor

    About

Early 19th century Danish carved and giltwood neoclassical tall case clock. Original gilding on all hand carved neoclassical ornamentation. Palace provenance, more than likely. Profile of each a man and a woman, most likely nobility or from the Royal house. Works are of English (London) origin as are quite often seen in Danish tall clocks. There was a strong English influence at that period which influenced form. The works also carry a "royal" motif of crown and cupids in the spandrels. Amazing piece.
